How do you get kids to understand they can make a difference? How do you get them involved? How do you give them the skills they’ll need to make things better? Join us for a conversation with three Academy Fellows who will present projects they’ve done surrounding policing, jury duty, and the recognition of marginalized groups. Afterward, participants meet in small groups for a more intimate discussion with other great teachers.

Amber Joseph, a native New Yorker, has been teaching history to middle schoolers in Manhattan for nearly 11 years. In April 2020, her early observations about teaching during the pandemic were published in The New York Review of Books

Holly Spinelli was an English teacher, academic advisor, and students’ rights activist in New York City public schools before moving to Monroe-Woodbury High School in Central Valley, New York. She is a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and participates in the Committee Against Racism and Bias in the Teaching of English.

Catherine Thompson is a passionate advocate for social justice and equity in education. In addition to teaching Equal Justice at School of the Future High School in Manhattan, she advises the Gender and Sexuality Alliance and Feminist Club, and collaborates on the Equity and Admissions Committees.
