The formalized discussion process known as the Socratic Seminar requires some setup but the payoff is big in terms of getting kids to listen carefully, argue on point, and feel comfortable taking part in a discussion. In this workshop, Academy Fellow Orli Kleiner shares the resources, guidelines, and tweaks she uses to make Socratic Seminars work in her classroom and online.

Orli Kleiner teaches AP World History at Brooklyn Technical High School; she has also taught AP Comparative and on-level Government and AP Psychology. Her teaching emphasizes the integration of content and skills, including primary and secondary source analysis, analytical writing, critical thinking, and building an argument. She advises several clubs, often slips memes and puns into her instruction, and is never found without a book.
